DIY: $2 Christmas Tree Collar Hack

This Dollar Store Christmas tree collar hack is super easy, cheap, and can be done in about 10-15 minutes.  It’s a great way to add a little texture and color to the bottom of your holiday tree, and will give it a “wood-like” appearance.  You can also adjust the diameter at the base to fit the size of your tree – yes, please!  Ok, so who’s ready?  DIY:  $2 Christmas Tree Collar Hack.

Supplies:

Amazon storage bins – here

Just Some Things to Note:

  • You will be cutting these, so they will not be reusable as storage bins.
  • If you find some similar bins, just make sure that they are collapsible (bend).
  • The bins are 10.5″H, so they will work with tree stands that are about the same height.
  • My tree size is 7.5″H – just for size reference.
  • The bins will fold for easy storage (not bulky rings).
  • You can change out the look each year by changing the bin color (or even by adding Christmas fabric to them – love it)!

Ok, just wanted to get all of that info out there. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Let’s get to the 5 Easy Steps:  DIY $2 Christmas Tree Collar Hack.

DIY: $2 Christmas Tree Collar Hack

Step #1:  Put Bins Together

All you will do for this first step is simply put the bins together.

Repeat for both of the storage bins and turn upside down.

You will not need the bottom pieces, so you can just put those 2 parts to the side.

Step #2:  Cut Bottom Of Storage Bin

Now, you will simply cut the bottom of each storage bin with your scissors.

It is kind of like a mesh type of fabric, and is very easy to cut.

Repeat for the second bin.

This is what they will look like at this stage of the process.

Step #3:  Cut Side of Storage Bin at Seam

Then you will cut the side of the storage bin at the seam.

This will be where the collapsible side meets together – where it bends.

My first cut went a little crooked, so just don’t rush this part.

The fabric is really thin, and my scissors were cutting before I was “ready” – LOL!!

Then just repeat for the second bin.

This is what your bins will look like now.

Step #4:  Wrap Both Bins Around Tree Stand

Now, you will simply take one of the storage bins and wrap it around the base of your Christmas tree.

Then add the second bin so that they both wrap around your tree (one in front, one in back).

Step #5:  Fold Bins to Size & Secure

Once you have both of the storage bins around the tree, you can figure out how big (wide) you need them to be.

  • This part will be the trickiest step, but still very easy.

Just take your bin and fold back one of the cut sides – to make a “clean” edge.

Now just figure out how much to pull around so that the “clean” edge covers the “cut” edge, and then secure it with a paper clip.

Once you have both sides (storage bins) done, you can just adjust it by moving that “cut” edge in or out – to make it smaller or larger.

  • I used 2 paper clips for the top portions.

I added a paper clip on the bottom part as well – so that it would stay put.

  • And I used 2 paper clips for the bottom portions = 4 paper clips total.

You can also use some type of adhesive velcro tabs if you don’t want to use paper clips.

Not fancy, but it does the job!  And it allows for the electrical cord to pass underneath (or it can go on top too).

Bonus:  You can still add a tree skirt underneath it (or around it) if you want something soft for your presents.

  • I just used my other hack – a white throw blanket for a tree skirt, and tucked it under the storage bins.

This blanket also hides my floor (electrical) outlet, which I do not want to see.  ๐Ÿ˜‰
