I wanted to hang Christmas garland on our mantel this year that would drape or swag in an elegant way. And I wanted it to look different than last year’s mantel decoration. But it still had to work around our TV, had to look fuller/more expensive, and had be something that I could switch up year-to-year. So I came up with 2 easy step-by-step tutorials to give you options (because a girl always needs some options)!! How to Swag Christmas Garland: 2 Mantel Ideas.

Double & Single Swag – Both
Step #1: Connect (2) 6 FT Pinecone Garland + (3) Icy Juniper Garland Strands Together
For this first step you will simply connect your 2 pinecone garland strands together + (3) icy juniper garland strands together.
- Click How to Combine Christmas Garland: 3 Easy Steps – for the 1st step details.
You will do this step for double and/or single swags.
Double Swag Tutorial
Step #1: See Above
Step #2: Attach Garland To Mantel (3 nails or command hooks)
I used 3 small nails and attached them to the mantel:
- ~(1 1/4″) deep from the edge
- one nail in the middle, and the other two ~ (13″) from sides
***You can also use command hooks for this part if you don’t want to damage your mantel.
You will then cut/tie 3 jute string pieces and tie them around the middle, and both sides of your garland.
- Here is what it will look like with the jute string attached to each nail.
So why did I attach the side nails at 13″ from the sides?
I was using 8″w/8″deep lanterns on each side of the TV, so I had to leave some space for those.
- If you don’t need that much space on the top part for your mantel decoration, you can attach your garland closer to the edge.
- You will probably have to play around with the placement of the jute string – to determine your preferred swag arch.
Step #3: Add Stockings To Center W/Tape
I went ahead and attached our stockings at this step so I didn’t have to mess up the garland (once the ribbon goes on).
- I secured mine with packing tape.
And of course you can see that I was already adding/playing around with the mantel decor – so that I could see the height/spacing needed for the stockings.
Step #4: Add Green Ribbon
This will take a little time just figuring out how you want your ribbon to swirl around the garland.
I started off with the top left side and then simply moved the ribbon – towards the lower left side – once I knew how the swirl was working.
Here is a side view so that you can see how the ribbon wraps around the garland in a swirl/loop pattern.
You are done!
Unless….. you want to do the Single Swag instead LOL!! If so, keep reading.
- Disclaimer: yes, this could have use a little fluffing, etc. – (not jael-worthy LOL)!! But I knew I wasn’t using this one this year, and might have gotten a little lazy. ๐
Single Swag Tutorial
Step #1: See Above
Step #2: Attach Garland To Mantel (2 nails or command hooks)
I used 2 small nails and attached them to the mantel:
- ~(1 1/4″) deep from the edge
- ~ (13″) from sides
***You can also use command hooks for this part if you don’t want to damage your mantel.
You will then cut/tie 2 jute string pieces and tie them around the both sides of your garland.
- Here is what it will look like with the jute string attached to each nail.
Step #3: Add Green Ribbon
For the single swag, I decided to do the ribbon (& pom pom garland) before the stockings.
But feel free to do what works best you.
I used the same ribbon swirl system as the double swag. This is what it will look like.
Step #4: Add White Pom Pom Garland
And because I personally like a little “extra,” I decided to add the white pom pom garland also.
- If you look closely at the picture below, you can see that I draped the TOP part – and didn’t swirl it to match the ribbon.
- But I did swirl the pom pom garland to match the ribbon on the SIDE portions.
This is only personal preference and for spacing purposes (the top right side was lacking thickness and the pom pom garland “drape” filled it).
- You will probably just have to play round with it to get the look you want.
Oh – and tie the white pom pom garland together with small white grois grain ribbon (where they connect together).
Step #5: Add Stockings To Center W/Tape
I went ahead and attached our stockings at this step so I could see how low they needed to hang.
- And remember how that top right part was lacking…. now I knew where that right stocking needed to go.
I secured all the stockings with packing tape.
Add some faux fur gift boxes or other Christmas decorations and you are done!
I love these little glitter trees too! Always gotta bring a little Boho into the mix – haha!
Here is a larger view so you can how it works around our TV.
So, which one do you like better?

Or Single Swag
