41 SHIPLAP IDEAS:  NOT JUST FOR WALLS (PART 2)

WHERE TO USE SHIPLAP :  1. LIVING ROOM

source: thetarnishedjewelblog.com

Use shiplap in the living room behind shelves,  as an accent wall, above the fireplace, behind built ins, or on a TV wall.

It adds just enough texture to balance out smooth surfaces (like electronics, lighting, and curtain rods), and gives the room an instant focal point.

WHERE TO USE SHIPLAP:  2. BEDROOM

Use shiplap with almost any decor style:  coastal, farmhouse, shabby chic, cottage, rustic, modern, industrial, and so on.

Use it on ceilings or behind the bed to add drama, or use it on headboards/ bed frames to add instant character.

WHERE TO USE SHIPLAP:  3. BATHROOM

source: georgianadesign.tumblr.com

Use shiplap horizontally or vertically.  The horizontal lines add visual width, whereas the vertical lines add visual height.  It looks great behind vanities and free standing tubs.

Afraid to commit?  Use a small amount (like a half wall) around the tub or in a small half bath/powder room.

Shiplap is extremely versatile.  It can be painted, stained, white-washed, left natural, or sanded and sealed – to name a few.

Paint shiplap white for a fresh clean look or paint it dark for a moody, dramatic look.  Leave shiplap natural (knotty and raw) for a rustic look.

WHERE TO USE SHIPLAP:  4. ENTRY & HALLWAY

source: favoritepaintcolors.blogspot.com
(Four Generations One Roof)

Use shiplap on entry or staircase walls.    It gives your guests a glimpse of your decor style and what they can expect to see in the rest of your home.

Shiplap also adds architectural detail to small areas, where there is minimal space to place furniture.

Use shiplap in the hallway as an accent wall, or as a hidden door for the powder bath.  It adds a little excitement to an area that is usually left bare.

WHERE TO USE SHIPLAP:  5. KITCHEN

source: magnolia market (joanna gaines)

The kitchen gives you a ton of options to use shiplap.  Use it as backsplash, on kitchen islands, in bay window nooks, as pantry doors, barn doors, or wrapped columns.

Use small boards or wide boards to get the “look” you want.  Most common boards widths used for shiplap are 6″, 8″, or 10″.

WHERE TO USE SHIPLAP:   6. LAUNDRY, MUDROOM, & PATIO

source: studio-mcgee.com

Use shiplap in unexpected places like laundry rooms and mudrooms.  These rooms are not typically seen by guests, but  can still be beautiful 🙂  Plus, you might need a little inspiration while you work- LOL!!

Use it outside in patio/entertaining areas to bring the warm & welcome feeling outdoors.  These areas will feel more like extensions of your home, than feeling separate or cold.

WHERE TO USE SHIPLAP:  7. MISCELLANEOUS

If you still aren’t sure if you want to add shiplap as a permanent structure, try it out as an accent.  It looks great (picture to the left) lying against the wall, and also in a frame (picture below).

It will add the character and charm you want without adding anything permanent to the wall.

No matter which one of these shiplap ideas you decide to try, you will have a little taste of how shiplap makes your home FEEL!!  And I know your guests will notice it too 🙂

Top 10 Best Desks For Students

I know it feels like we just started our summer break, but it’s never too early to begin back-to-school planning.  Every year I think it’s all taken care of, and then there’s always that ONE little thing (like the not-so-important backback – haha!!) that we wait to buy until the last minute!!  So, let’s take care of the most important item – the student study desk –  first and get that one removed from the list.  Top 10 Best Desks for Students (Under $150).

Whether you’re looking for: small desks, desks with shelves, desks with drawers, corner desks, l-shaped desks, fold-up desks, desks with printer storage or keyboard trays – there is a desk on the list for you.

***NOTE***  This post contains affiliate links which means that I will receive a small compensation if you purchase something from these links.  Please see my disclosure and privacy policies below for more information.  Thanks for your support! 🙂

TOP 10 BEST DESKS FOR STUDENTS (UNDER $150)

I’m gonna keep this post short and sweet this time!!  Woohoo – about time right??  But of course I have to remind you of a couple of things just to make the shopping process easier.

TIPS & REMINDERS:

  • MEASURE:   Measure the length, width, and height of the desk – twice.   And don’t forget to check how far a drawer/door will come out when open.  You don’t want your perfect small desk to block walkways or bump into bedroom furniture (like dressers or beds) when you’re using it.
  • FUNCTION:  What will you be doing on your desk-  homework, writing, computer work, reading, crafts, gaming etc?  You want to make sure your desk is wide enough (on top) for a computer and possibly a binder or notebook for homework.  And would you benefit from a keyboard tray?
  • STORAGE:  Will you need top storage (like a hutch), or storage underneath (like shelves or cubbies)?  Will you need a file drawer to keep documents stored or possibly a small drawer for school/work supplies like pencils, pens, scissors, etc?  Will you need a printer shelf?
  • PLACEMENT:  Where will you put your desk?  Make sure to look around the room and find the perfect spot for your new desk – before you buy it!!  Don’t purchase it first, and then find a spot that will work afterwards.  Knowing where you want to place your desk will help save so much time when searching.

TOP 10 BEST DESKS FOR STUDENTS (UNDER $150)

Whether you’re looking for your kid’s first desk, one for your teenager’s new “big-kid” bedroom,  a college student’s first dorm room desk, your husband’s gaming desk, or maybe even a work-space area for yourself (LOL!!) ….. price is always a factor.

So, I have rounded up my favorite desks that provide the best bang for the money.  You shouldn’t have to compromise style or function for money – right?

***FYI*** The last desk listed – is the one my daughter chose!!  Scroll down to the very end for pictures.

IN OUR HOUSE:

And here it is in my daughter’s room!  Sorry the pictures aren’t better – we still haven’t gotten new carpet yet. 🙁  I just wanted to show you what it looks like, and let you know how much we love it!!

She actually picked it out herself – so that speaks volumes!!  Teenagers- right??

I love how everything (the drawers and shelves) are covered by the door/drawer fronts.  It just keeps things looking a little tidier – when it’s really NOT!!

Plus, it has that (circle) cut out to help hide cable plugs.  She can also charge her phone on here too.

Hope you found one that you, your teenager, or your student can agree on!!  So, which one is your favorite?  Shoot me a comment- I’d love to hear some feedback.

Spring Home Tour 2019

Since I’m running a little behind on getting my spring home tour post out this year, I guess it can now double as our summer home tour also – LOL!!  It seems like I have these great plans of ALL the things I’m going to accomplish each week (or month)…..and then….well….laundry, cooking, cleaning, girls’ activities (you get the picture) get bumped into 1st place.

So naturally, MY plans get pushed back to the back burner.  Plus… Mother’s Day is quickly approaching.  And I gotta make sure my last, final push for getting gifts from the fam is STRONG.

Oh, that and my hopes of getting mother of the year – AGAIN this year- haha!!  Anyhoo…..who’s ready to see our Spring Home Tour 2019?

14 Easy Patriotic & Memorial Day Decorating Ideas is now ready!!

SPRING HOME TOUR 2019

You’ll notice quickly that my house kind of has a blue & yellow, and pineapple theme for the entry, dining room, and powder bath this year.  I do love yellow, ( because it just makes me happy) and I think our family needed a little extra “sunshine” this year.

If you had to choose just one….. what would be your favorite spring color this year?  I’d love to know which color is the most popular choice for everyone – shoot me a comment.

SPRING ENTRY

You can also tell that I have a THANG for stripes – totally obsessed with them also!!  Want more info on the yellow striped throw blanket, click here.  I got the navy and white striped throw pillow and rug ( both) from Home Goods.

Want more info on the blue circle pillow, click here or the Aloha pillow, click here.

SPRING DINING ROOM

I love how the different hues of aqua, turquoise, seafoam, and spa blue – all create interest and depth against the navy.  These blue-green colors also soften the stark contrast of navy and white when used as accents colors.

What do you think?

The yellows I used are all different shades also.  The yellow pitcher and daisy plates are more of a gold-yellow tone, the wreath is more of a green-yellow tone, and the place mats and farmhouse truck pillow (below) are more of a wheat-yellow tone.

These different yellow tones help keep the eye moving from place to place, and add visual weight to certain accent pieces.

To see more of our Spring Dining Room Easter Tablescape, click here.

SPRING POWDER BATHROOM

Sorry that the pictures from our powder bath – are just not the greatest!!  I guess since this room does not receive any natural light, the pictures turn out a little bit stark.

And it’s probably CAMERA-USER ERROR – lol!!  Just wanted to get that out there.  Hopefully, you can still find some inspiration  🙂

*** I will be doing a post of our powder bathroom remodel – coming soon ***

So, you can tell I am crushin’ on pineapples -still!

Picture above: is an adorable hand towel that just makes me smile every time I go into our powder bath.  It comes as a set with an aqua towel.

Picture below:  Here is the 2nd towel (the top aqua towel in the wagon).  They are such fun patterns, and add the perfect pop of color to our bath.

I am loving my new blue and yellow bath rug by Opalhouse!  What do you think?  It’s a fun twist on boho style – right?

I like that it incorporates the bright yellow and blue (more whimsical) colors versus the darker neutral (more muted) colors.  And that fun aqua fringe – yep – makes the whole rug!

The powder bath is the perfect room in your home to have some fun decorating with!!  It’s a small room that can add TONS of personality.  So, welcome your guests with a smile 🙂

SPRING LIVING ROOM

I am using my emerald green and kelly green decor accents in my living room this spring.  They normally have a home in the dining room, but were moved due to the Easter Tablescape decor this year.

But now….. I am kind of liking the green in here since it seems to connect the green from the outdoors as well.  I’ll keep ya updated if I decide to change it!! LOL!!

Yes – my “love & hugs” will always find a home somewhere in our house.  They just add a little daily encouragement, and can be seen from anywhere in the kitchen/living room area.

And since these are the most used areas in our home – they do their job done all. day. long!!  It’s the little things!

If you want more information on the shiplap accent wall, white brick fireplace, or shiplap bookshelf click Adding a Shiplap Feature Wall to Living Room.

I do love how the aqua color(s) also mix with the greens and the navy blues in here as well.  It is just a subtle shift in the color wheel, but it creates such a soothing environment.

SPRING PATIO/ SPRING OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE

Our outdoor patio area definitely received the most attention and updates for spring this year.  After we flooded, all of our attention (and money) went into remodeling the inside of our home.  So, the backyard was looking very sad!!

We have replaced the fence (on one side for now), and have added some new cushions, plants, and rugs to freshen it up.

Even though we have a long way to go (the flooring around the patio (cool deck) has started peeling away, and will also need replacing- ugh)……  I can see the LIGHT!!  God is so good!!

DIY Christmas Donut Ornaments: Using Pool Noodles

I am co-hosting a Christmas Party for an organization in December, and donuts is the theme – click here for Let it Snow – Donut Christmas Party for more info.    Since we are working with a very small party budget, and definitely a very small decorating budget, buying a ton of donut ornaments wasn’t really an option.  Plus, we needed a craft that the girls could participate in for the party.  I had been looking for a couple of months trying to find a good tutorial on making “fake” donuts.  All of the tutorials with clay looked too complicated or time consuming, and the ones with making fake icing looked like too much work – LOL!!  So, that is how I ended up with DIY Christmas Donut Ormanents – Using Pool Noodles.

***UPDATE***  See how the donuts ornaments completed the look for the Let It Snow – DONUT Christmas Party (Part 3:  The Event).  They worked our even better than planned – they were used throughout the party decor, and made the party come to life!!

Want more Christmas craft ideas?  Click Buffalo Check DIY Snow-Woman (part 1) or Buffalo Check DIY Christmas Ornament Balls (part 2).

NOTE:  Made 2 ways:  one from fake icing (top right); one from cotton balls (bottom left)

DIY CHRISTMAS DONUT ORNAMENT:  USING POOL NOODLES

THE PROJECT:

We are decorating for an event so we need quite a lot of ornaments.  Using the supplies listed below will make 180 donut ornaments (with 2 pool noodles).  If you want less, adjust supplies according to your needs.  Here is a breakdown to give you an idea.

4 COLORS Donut Ornaments:  (pink, turquoise, purple, green)

Fake icing sprinkled donuts:   24 (we will use + 24 solid colored donuts inbetween) = 48

Cotton icing sprinkled donuts:  36  (we will use + 36 solid colored donuts inbetween) = 72

TOTAL:  120 FOR ORNAMENTS

For garland, you will have one donut with sprinkles & one solid.  This helps make them “pop” off of the white tinsel background.  Love the bow:  click How to Make the Perfect Bow.

PINK Donut Ornaments for Numbers:

Cotton icing sprinkled donuts:  36 (12 donuts/number 2 )

Solid colored pink donuts:  24 (extra to use as garland on sign)

TOTAL:  60 FOR NUMBERS

The numbers are their graduating year (2022), and will go on a sign in the event center.  The girls will be decorating these for their craft project.  Just wanted to show you where we are planning on using them.

***GRAND TOTAL:  180 DONUTS***

FYI:  All supplies will be the same for either ornament projects – EXCEPT last 2 items.  they have astericks * 🙂

SUPPLIES:

  1. (2) Pool Noodles – I used one pink, one blue
  2. knife to cut pool noodles
  3. cutting board

  5. plastic dropcloth
  6. wooden blocks
  7. wax paper
  8. glue gun + glue sticks
  9. paper plates
  10. tweezers
  11. q-tips
  12. multi-colored sequins – I used Hobby Lobby Tree House Studio brand, not on HL website 🙁

DIY CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS:  USING POOL NOODLES

***TUTORIAL***

STEP 1:

Cut each pool noodles at about 5/8″ sections (5/8′ is between 1/2″ and 3/4″ – fyi).  Each noodle should make roughly 90 small donut rings.  So you will have 90 blue donut rings + 90 pink donut rings at this point = 180.

STEP 2:

Spray paint the BLUE rings only if you are using blue and pink noodles.  Spray paint both sides.  Use plastic dropcloth to cover ground & use wooden blocks to lift donut rings up off of the ground.  Let dry 20 minutes before flipping to other side.  When finished drying, group into colors and store on wax paper or paper plates.  ***You will need to spray paint pink if you aren’t using a pink noodle.***

Inspiration Picture below from Hobby Lobby Ornaments

***STEPS 3 & 4 WILL BE SPLIT INTO 2 SECTIONS:  FAKE ICING AND COTTON BALLS ICING***

FAKE ICING

STEP 3:  FAKE ICING  (WHIPPLE)

Follow directions on Whipple box.  After getting it ready, gently squeeze icing onto donut ring.  Use sparingly so that you can make 24 donuts.  After squeezing a small amount on top and sides, use q-tip to spread out.

Do all of the icing on donuts fairly quickly so that the Whipple doesn’t begin to dry.  You will need it damp so that the sequins can stick into it and mold.

***TIP***  This step took about an hour by myself – fyi.  If you want to work at a faster rate – get a helper 😉

STEP 4 FAKE ICING:  SEQUINS

Place chosen sequins on with tweezers and push down into icing with q-tips.   Put sequins out in colors and sizes to make this process go faster.

***TIP***  Work quickly with this section so that icing doesn’t dry.  Also, gently place sequins onto icing so that your tweezers don’t get icing on them.  It will get very messy if your tweezers get dirty.

***STEPS 3 & 4 WILL BE SPLIT INTO 2 SECTIONS:  FAKE ICING AND COTTON BALLS ICING***

COTTON BALLS ICING

STEP 3:  COTTON BALLS ICING

One jumbo cotton ball will cover 2 donuts rings.  Gently pull the cotton ball from both sides until it makes a very long cotton strand (will almost look like a mustache – ha!).  Then tear it in half.  One section will fit one donut.  Then hot glue cotton strand onto tops & sides of donut.

***TIP***  You might have to play around with the cotton to see how much your want on the sides.  It should mimic icing dripping down.

***TIP***  I got about 6 cotton balls (12 pieces) ready at a time so that I could do a lot of hot gluing in groups.  This step also takes about an hour.

STEP 4 COTTON BALLS:  SEQUINS

This will be similar to the fake icing tutorial except you will be using hot glue to secure sequins to cotton balls.  Choose the sequins you want to use and grab with tweezers.  You will add a SMALL drop of hot glue to SEQUIN (not cotton) and gently place onto cotton top.  Use your q-tip to hold sequin down.

***TIP***  Do not get into a rush with this step or you will have a hot glue + cotton ball mess!!  To make this step easier, I picked all of the larger sequins I wanted to use, and then put them on first.  They took up more room on the donut, and then I could tell what other colors and sizes to fill in the gaps with.  This step takes another hour – fyi.

CLOSEUP PICTURES

FAKE ICING (WHIPPLE) DONUTS

COTTON BALLS ICING DONUTS

STEP 5:  (SAME FOR BOTH)

Add a small ornament hook into top and back side of donut.  The foam makes it very easy to poke your hook through.  I tried a paper clip, short hook, and long hook to see which one I preferred….and ended up liking the short hook the best.  The paper clip of course is the cheapest version if working with a low budget and is the strongest (fyi).

HURRICANE HARVEY FLOODED HOUSE MAKEOVER (Part 2)

All I can say is…..wow!  Our flooded house makeover after Hurricane Harvey has been LONG, extremely draining, emotional and painful.  I am not going to sugar coat this horrible situation at all – just gonna keep it real!! Some days I didn’t know if I could even get out of bed and go through our “normal” routine; it was really that bad.  Even now as I go back through the pictures, my tears flow uncontrollably.  It will be an experience that we will never forget, and will change the way we view our lives forever.

It has been over 11 months, and we are still unpacking boxes and getting settled in.  BUT…. through the grace of God, and His Spirit moving in and taking over – our family has survived!!    We are beginning to see a glimpse of hope and wonder of what God has in store for our family.  And this house – well, it is now turning back into our HOME again!! AMEN!!   If you want to view part 1 click HURRICANE HARVEY FLOODED – THE DESTRUCTION (Part 1).

So, today I am posting before and after pictures of our house.  Some are before the flood, after the flood, the rebuilding, and the areas that I am working on.   I will show more “staged” or decorated pictures as I get rooms completely done, but wanted to show pictures of the progress while unpacking.  NOTE:  things are not clean, nor are these the best quality of pictures.  Hopefully soon I can do some updates.  As for now – here they are!!  woohoo!!

Leave me some feedback- I’d love to hear what you think.  And please continue to pray for those who are still without their homes.  It means the world to them 🙂

REBUILDING AFTER HURRICANE HARVEY:

FLOODED HOUSE MAKEOVER

I am loving my custom x-shaped double barn doors for the office/piano room.  I know they were a lot of work for the guys to install since they they were so heavy….but they do dress up the entrance to this room don’t ya think??   My husband has been able to work from this room now, and can close the doors easily for a little quiet time.

Opening up the walls from the kitchen to the living room has made a huge difference in the flow of these 3 areas.  I always felt like we had a living room section, a breakfast table section, and then the kitchen.  Even though they were only separated with the double arches and bar top, they still felt closed off.  Now we have a ton of natural light and can access both sides of the island.

Yep….my Boomer always likes to pose for the pictures!!  He is such a glory hound – no pun intended!! l can’t wait to set up the bookshelves with some family photos and personalize this shiplap wall.  It is still one of my favorite things that we decided to add to the remodel.

I am soooo happy I decided to paint the bed, nightstands, and dresser (not pictured -yet).  You can actually see the bed now, and it looks so dreamy!!  Here is the tutorial for the nightstands here, and I’ll get the bed and dresser tutorials up soon.  I painted them with a different technique (dry brushed ) than the nightstands (glazed/antiqued), so the tutorials are not the same.  Just a FYI 😉

I will post more pictures soon, and provide some closeups pictures also.  This is just a little sneak peek at all of the changes we made.

HOME. SWEET. HOME

SO….. Whatcha think??  I am loving how it is all coming together, and can’t wait to get everything unpacked.  I know I am feeling more like myself already because I am already thinking of decorating for fall – LOL!!

Love & Hugs 🙂
