Home Tour: Coastal Farmhouse Master Bedroom

Today, I am finally getting to share our master bedroom home tour – woohoo!  This room is still not completely finished, but it is getting closer day by day.  Of course when that happens, I will probably be ready to change it again – lol, but for now it is working for us.  If you love all things farmhouse, and your heart beats coastal cottage, then you are at the right place.  Here it is!  Home Tour:  Coastal Farmhouse Master Bedroom.

HOME TOUR:  COASTAL FARMHOUSE MASTER BEDROOM

So far, I have done a couple of posts on our master bed frame makeover:  painted white and our diy nightstand makeover:  painted white with dark top, to show you one side of our room.   (see links below pictures below)

And now, I can finally show you the rest of our bedroom.

I know there are some things that need to be tweaked, but at least it’s starting to feel more like home again.

Accent wall Sherwin-Williams Naval – SW 6244 and the side walls are Silver Strand  – SW 7057.

HOME TOUR:  COASTAL FARMHOUSE MASTER BEDROOM

So, what is coastal farmhouse style anyway?  Coastal farmhouse style is really a “feeling” rather than a “look.”  Huh?  What does that mean?

It is the feeling you get when you walk into a room versus what the room actually looks like.

So, your coastal farmhouse bedroom will be a little different than mine.  It might look similar, but feel different.

What’s the secret then?  Use the 10 elements below to find out!

10 ELEMENTS OF COASTAL FARMHOUSE STYLE:

  1. Relaxed, calming vibe
  2. Antique, vintage furniture or accessories
  3. Shades of blue, gray, or tan
  4. White painted items, white-washed items
  5. Lots of pillows, throws blankets, and fluffy bedding
  6. Coastal Accessories: items with rope, coral or seashells, sea glass decor
  7. Mementos:  items that evoke precious memories
  8. Woven baskets
  9. Tropical plants or natural greenery floral accents
  10. Make it personal

HOME TOUR:  COASTAL FARMHOUSE MASTER BEDROOM

BEFORE, DURING & AFTER PICTURES:

Before we begin the tour, I wanted to show you a couple of pictures of what our bedroom used to looked like before the flood (last day before we evacuated), during the cleanup process (2nd set of pics), and after (now).

GOOD  NEWS:  The furniture was solid wood and we were able to save it.

SAD NEWS:  The water covered and damaged the feet, so we had to paint it.

END RESULT:  It was a blessing in disguise – we should have painted that furniture a long time ago!!

You can see more of our house remodel by clicking Hurricane Harvey – The Destruction (part 1) and clicking Hurricane Harvey:  House Makeover (part 2).

HOME TOUR:  COASTAL FARMHOUSE MASTER BEDROOM

MASTER BEDROOM TOUR:

So, who’s ready to begin the tour?  Let’s first start off with the obvious – the painted furniture.

It always amazes me what a fresh coat of paint can do – right?  The painted bed and painted nightstands completely transform the dark furniture, and give the room an updated, fresh look.

Plus, the white really pops off of the navy accent wall.

But I do understand that not everyone enjoys painting nor wants to take on the challenge of painting furniture.

If this is you, scroll down to the end of the post for more information on bedroom furniture ideas.

If you want more info on the white-washed bed click here, or more info on the nightstands click here.

Picture Below.  This is my first time sharing our painted dresser (making it’s official DEBUT – lol) in the master bedroom, and the white-wash tutorial is ready (see below).

Do you like it?

The white-washing technique gives it a beach-y, more casual feel and lightens up the darker furniture.

Plus, the original color of the dark furniture blended into the color of the hardwoods, giving it zero contrast -yikes!!

When we first moved into this house (14 years ago), we had carpet in here so the dark furniture looked great.  Yep, that’s right – we’ve had that furniture for 14 years now.

So, needless to say the darker dresser was waaaaay overdo for a LITTLE update anyway- lol!!

*** DRESSER TUTORIAL is READY – Click Here White-Washed Dresser. ***

Do you think I maybe should have been using a drop cloth all of these years when painting furniture – hahaha!!!   But I have an idea for painting the floor in the garage soon – wink wink!!

In the picture below, this is the other side of our bedroom.  And I will admit, this is the stage it is in right now….. I have not finished decorating it yet.

The master bedroom is always the last one to get done – am I right??  It comes right after volleyball lessons, teenage girls’ beauty items (don’t even get me started with that – lol!!), and well…. life.

Just keeping it real ladies!!

Above:  I did paint that floor length mirror blue (~ 8 years ago), but do not have pictures of the process – sorry!!  It’s a water-color painting technique – that I love.

I will try to figure out a way to show you the technique because it really turned out so beautiful.

More pictures of the bed and bedding…..

All of my comforter selections tend to lean botanical, floral, or boho style.  This way, I can stay within my coastal style (botanical or boho) and farmhouse style (floral) no matter which one I choose.

This blue botanical  bedding is Ralph Lauren, and has reversible stripes on the back side (which I love).  This allows me to change things around when I get a little tired of it without having to buy something new.  Win-Win!!

And of course – I’m a color gal – so it’s gotta have some punch to it!!  Scroll to the end of the post to shop bedding – I could not find this exact bedding, but found some similar choices that are equal in style.

Love all things blue – click 14 Ways to Decorate wit Blue:  For Every Room & Budget.

Closeup picture of the nightstand and farmhouse lamp.  It is no longer around either, but scroll down to the end of the post for similar options.

The little white basket on the floor was painted also….but again I do not have pictures. What??  Another one with no pictures.  I know. I know.  UGH!!

It is on my to-do list for the blog though.  It was so easy to paint, and gave it new life.  What do you think – is it a winner?

This bench is definitely a life-saver.  It hides the tv cable “junk” (my husband wants to mount the tv on that wall above the bench – ?? – maybe ?? – we’ll see), and those 2 baskets store my girls’ swimsuits and favorite beach towels.

They like to just come in and quickly grab what they need to head to the pool.  But I am thinking it’s about time they could store their own stuff!!

It’s the little things – right??

Here is another picture of the blue mirror and white basket.  For now the mirror is leaning against the wall because we don’t know if the tv wall mount is a sure thing yet – hahaha!!

The floor length mirror is a must for our bedroom though, so that we have somewhere to check ourselves out!!  Plus, I really love that it bounces so much light around the room.

See Picture Below.

This picture shows the left side of the room, leading to our master bath.

If you want to see the complete transformation of the master bathroom makeover click Master Bath Remodel:  Hardware Accessories or Shower Remodel Design Guide:  10 Things You Must Know.

It is by far one of the biggest changes made to our entire house – besides the kitchen.  Everyone who has seen it in person has given us a ton of compliments – so I’m kind of proud!!

Check it out if you have time.

See pictures below.

And my must-have barn door…..that almost didn’t happen!!  That’s another whole story – but at least we got it!!  If you want to see more barn door inspiration click 55 Incredible Ideas:  Not Just For Farmhouse Style.

Our other entry door to the bath was a double door system, and blocked off the left side of the wall where the dresser sits.  We always had to push the dresser down so that it barely even fit on the wall.

Then if you wanted to get something out of the drawer, it bumped into our other furniture.

We had the barn door installed to slide right because it was a space we never used (in that corner).

***TIP*** Just a little head up…..remember that it’s more difficult (not impossible though) to hang something on the wall where the door slides.  So, just make sure you hang your barn door to slide to an unused area of your room, or unused/less functional wall area.

And my favorite t-bar barn door handles….I kinda have a thang for these.  They are my go-to hardware all over the house.  But I especially liked this one because it is a heavier, sturdier handle.

Plus, I knew we needed an inside way to get out of the bath -ha!!  See below.

Inside the master bath – handle……

Better view where you can see the limited amount of wall space on the left side of the doorway.  It might also be that our dresser is bigger than it should be for the space…..but who wants to admit that?

This celadon glazed pitcher has been with us for AWHILE….to say the least.  I bought it at Home Goods ~8 years ago (or longer) and it just gets moved from room to room as I need it.

There is just something about the soft color, and that rusted handle that calms my nerves and reminds me of home.  And who doesn’t want their master bedroom to be a calming and serene retreat?

This “love pillow” is another favorite of mine that gets moved from room to room.  I also have a “home pillow” that is slightly more blue-gray than this blue-aqua color.

The shabby, ruffled edges and  roped letters add the perfect amount of texture to complete the coastal farmhouse style.

And who doesn’t love throw blankets??  Can a girl ever really have too many blankets or throw pillows?  No….I don’t think so!!

In here, I like that one throw is more sophisticated in color (bed- spa blue) and the other one is more fun (basket -mint colored).  These 2 colors together add a little dimension against the navy and cobalt blue bedding and pillows.

Which throw do you like more?  The one on the bed, or the one in the basket?  Let me know?

Master Bathroom Remodel: Hardware Accessories

Now that we have settled into our home (a little more) after flooding, I can honestly say that it’s slowly beginning to feel like normal!!!  Hallejuhah!!!  Cue the angels & the choir, because HOPE is in the air!!  It might also be due to the fact that I am taking a fabulous bible study class called “Anchored in Hope,” (taught by an incredibly blessed woman), but regardless, something beautiful inside the soul is taking place!!   And that hope has inspired me to finally get around to do a post on our Master Bathroom Remodel: Hardware Accessories.

Master Bathroom Remodel:  Hardware Accessories

I knew there was a ton to cover in this room, and that is probably why I have been procrastinating on getting this post done – LOL!!

Now, that I am looking through pictures, etc…., I know that I will have to split the master bath remodel into several posts.   So, just sit tight…. it’s coming!!

Sink, shower, tub, and Barn door Hardware will come in next post – so stay tuned!!

Shower Post is Done!  Shower Remodel Design Guide:  10 Things You Must Know.

Master Bathroom Remodel:  Hardware Accessories

First Things First:

  • I will honestly admit that I had NO idea how much thought and planning went into a master bathroom remodel.
  • It’s very overwhelming at first (probably because I hadn’t planned on flooding – arrrrrgh!!)…… but with the right planning, it is achievable.

Second:

  • Out of all of the changes that we made in the bathroom, the hardware accessories are what makes the bathroom mine!!
  • The hardware and chandelier are the final accessories that complete the master bath;  they are the jewelry that adds the final touch.  And they reflect my (our – ha!) personality.

Master Bathroom Remodel:  Hardware Accessories

I’ll be covering all things crystal, glass, and mirrors:

  1.   Chandelier
  2.   Crystal knobs
  3.   Glass pulls
  4.   Door knobs
  5.   Mirrors

Master Bed Frame Makeover – Painted White

So, we have finally moved back into our bedroom downstairs…..and I am so excited about how the entire bedroom turned out.  The  2 things that “make” the bedroom and create some drama are the navy accent wall, and the white bed frame.  And since I painted the bed, I thought it would be awesome to show you the technique if you want to change your bed also.    Here is my master bed frame makeover – painted white using the dry-brushed technique tutorial.  If you want a glazed or antiqued tutorial (like my nightstands)…..click  HERE. Want to see my master bath makeover, click Master Bathroom Remodel:  Hardware Bling.

***NOTE***This post contains affiliate links which means that I will receive a small compensation if you purchase something from my website, at no extra cost to you.  Thanks for your support 🙂

MASTER BED FRAME MAKEOVER – PAINTED WHITE

Where did it all begin?

before…..

after…..

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • primer – I used zinsser

  • white paint – I used Behr Swiss Coffee – Home Depot

  • clear wax – I used trewax

  • paint brush – I prefer 2″ angled (angled gets into the grooves better)

  • 150-grit sandpaper or sponge -to distress bed

  • large boxes (heavy or weighted) or piece of furniture – to hold headboard/footboard upright while painting

  • wooden blocks- to hold up (rest) feet of bed on

  • rags/old shirts – to wipe off wax

  • canvas dropcloth or plastic – to protect floor

STEP 1:  PRIMING

***For Dry-Brushed Method***

before…..

To Prime:

Put your primer on in long brush strokes, making sure not to cover your bed in a solid paint color.  See below.

Closeup……

Full view……

Do the same technique for footboard and side rails if you have them.

*** LET PRIMER DRY OVERNIGHT***

STEP 2 – PAINTING (1ST COAT)

Put your first coat of white paint over primer in long brush strokes again, but this time covering more of the wood.

BELOW:  left side painted….right sight primed

You should be able to notice that the paint covers better than the primer, and it should feel thicker as you brush it on.  Just make sure NOT to cover the wood completely.  You should still be able to see brush strokes.

BELOW:  PICTURE OF 1ST COAT PAINTED

***LET DRY OVERNIGHT***

STEP 3:  PAINT 2 MORE COATS

BELOW:  Headboard 3 coats, Footboard 2 coats.  Can you tell how the headboard has more coverage on it than the footboard?

***TIP***  This is the stage/step where I go back and add in some paint to cover certain areas that do no look as even.  This is just personal preference for me.

***LET DRY OVERNIGHT***

STEP 4:  PUT CLEAR WAX ON

Now you can put on your wax, let dry, and rag/buff off.

Put on more coats of wax if you want a shinier finish- just fyi.

STEP 5:  SAND/DISTRESS

Use your 150-grit sandpaper or sponge and gently sand over random areas where you want some original wood to show.

I like my sanded areas to be over the ornate “leaves” sections to accent the details, and then over the corners where the bed would naturally get “bumped”.

I also added some sanded areas in the middle sections of the headboard and footboard to move the eye around.

***OPTIONAL STEP***  WAX OVER SANDED AREAS.  I like to do this just to bring out the wood tone (the wax makes the wood tone darker for more contrast) against the white paint.

But of course, this is your bed, so it is your decison!!

AND….YOU……ARE…….DONE!!!  WOOHOO!!

TIME TO PUT YOUR “NEW” BED INTO YOUR BEDROOM!!!

Hope you love how your bed turns out….as much as I love mine!!  Let me know how your progress is going- or if you have any questions?

I would love to see some pictures of your bed too!!

I really feel like I got new furniture…without the high pricetag!!

Plus the white really lifts the room so much more than the stained brown color, and it gives me the contrast I need against the navy wall.  Don’t cha think ??

Fall Home Tour 2021: Fall Flower Tips

I am excited to share our Fall Home Tour 2021 with you – finally!  This year I wanted to show you how I use different fall floral arrangements around our house, and added in some helpful tips so you can get the same look at YOUR home too.  And since this year I tried to go with a quick, simple, and easy approach for fall decorating, all of my flowers and other autumn accent pieces will fit this “relaxed look.”   So, let’s get to the goodies!  Fall Home Tour 2021:  Fall Flower Tips

***Note:  This post contains affiliate links which means that I will receive a small compensation if you purchase something from these links.  Please see my privacy and disclosure policies below.  Thanks for your support. 🙂

Fall Home Tour 2021: Fall Flower Tips

First Things First:

I wanted to start off by saying that I’m using the term fall “arrangements” –  VERY loosely!  lol!

So, here are some answers to some of the questions that you may have:

1)  How do you plan or design Fall Arrangements?

My approach to fall flowers or any floral “arrangements” is basically:

  • 2 -3 long faux floral stems per vase or
  • 2 faux florals bushels per vase

Yep – super easy!

2)  Where can you use Fall Floral Arrangements?

Use them in/on/as:

  •  Dining Room and/or Kitchen Table (Centerpiece)
  •  Living Room Coffee Table (Centerpiece)
  •  Entry Console Table
  •  Bookshelf
  •  Mantel
  •  Accent/Side Tables

You can also put some in your powder bath, on your master bedroom dresser, or guest room vanity.

Second:

To navigate this post easier, I listed:

  • what supplies I used for each arrangement
  • which room of our home it is in
  • followed by the fall flower tip

Ok, let’s get to it!  Fall Home Tour 2021:  Fall Flower Tips.

Fall Home Tour 2021: Fall Flower Tips

Tip #1:  Use Neutral Colored Vases For A Cohesive Look

Try to stick with one main color for all of your vases – if possible.

This way, guests will see the fall flower “colors” and you can use more arrangements around your house.

Here (pictured below) are all of the fall arrangements that I am using this year at our home, just so you can see them in one large group.

Supplies:

Tip #2:  Make One Arrangement Your Showstopper

Since I like to use a lot of fall flowers throughout my home, I always create one that is the showstopper each year.

Yep – I said it!  One always has to be the drama queen, and center of attention – insert eye roll here!

  • The dining room (or kitchen) is a great place for this floral arrangement because of the table size.

You can also put it on a buffet or sideboard to showcase your handiwork, or on your kitchen island.

Fall Home Tour 2021:  Fall Flower Tips

Fall Home Tour 2021:  Fall Flower Tips

Throw in a couple of small white pumpkins (or candles), some wooden beads, crystal candle sticks, and some mercury glass votives – for an instant fall table centerpiece.

Then light it up!

Living Room Coffee Table

Supplies:

I just had to add this picture because Boomer always has to be a part of the “trial” process – lol.

I was testing out the fall pillows (note price tag still on the blessings pillow) and throw to make sure I liked the colors together, and Boomer was giving me his opinion.

Ok, moving on 😉

Fall Home Tour 2021:  Fall Flower Tips

Tip #3:  Use All One Color For Big Impact

You’ll notice that the “one color” floral arrangements carry more visual weight than the multi-color floral arrangements.

  • I chose to use this rust-colored arrangement one on our coffee table this year because it breaks up the multi-color throw pillows on our couch.

I also use it on our kitchen table – just because of the height of the branches, and to bring color to our neutral kitchen.

Click here to see how to make the easy 5-minute basket centerpiece.

Without price tags – lol!

And my white chenille pumpkins that my Mom picked up from Round Top years ago.

They find a new home each year, no matter what.

Entry Console Table

Supplies:

Tip #4:  Double Duty = Double Impact

Don’t be afraid to use 2 vases with simple floral arrangements together, to make a big statement.

  • Choose “one color” flowers (tip #3) to add visual weight.
  • Use different vase heights to add contrast and interest.

I used 3 long yellow stems for the taller white vase, and one yellow stem (shortened) for the smaller light gray vase.

Here is the other side of our entry – with the pumpkin garland.

And yes, I know I “staged” this area with the striped sunhat and gold shoes.

I just wanted to add a little whimsy, and to feel like I had actually picked pumpkins at the pumpkin patch!

Living Room Bookshelf

Supplies:

Tip #5:  Use Wreaths In Unexpected Places

This year I decided to use:

  • the bigger fall wreath inside our bookshelf – just propped up against the back wall
  • and the smaller fall wreath on top of a white cake stand – to add texture and height

Click  here or here to see the large fall wreath in other rooms, and here to see the smaller wreath.

I love reusing/repurposing accent pieces – saves a ton of money!

Living Room Fireplace Mantel:

Supplies:

Tip #6:  Use One Floral Arrangement To Tie All Colors Together

It’s always a good idea to use one floral arrangement that ties all of the different fall colors together – just to unite your color palette.

I chose to put this one on our fireplace mantel because it is in the center of our home and you can see it from the front and back door areas.

Accent/End Tables:

You can also use floral arrangements on side/end/accent tables or even nightstands.

I’m using 2 of the arrangements that I already showed you (just wanted to give you some other ideas).

Tip #7:  Keep Sightlines Clear

Remember to keep enough room on your table so that your family and friends have a place to put their drink, and to keep sightlines clear so you can still see each other.

This first picture below shows the accent table up against the wall, so the floral arrangement acts as a natural backdrop and keeps sightlines clear.

  • this is the easiest placement, to make sure that your arrangement doesn’t get in the way.

The next 2 pictures are of a floating accent table.

The floral arrangement is to the side, and not the back.

Now, you can see that it doesn’t get in the way of people visiting with each other or block the tv.

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

Has your (once new) beautiful frameless shower door plastic sweep become filled with green mildew and rust-colored water stains?  You are not alone!!  I am even embarrassed to show you what our shower door seal actually looked like (before I cleaned it),  but felt that there were others like me in the same boat.  So, here are the 2 ways (methods) that I used:  How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep.

  • Method #1:  Cleaning Without Removing The Door Sweep
  • Method #2:  Cleaning With Removing The Door Sweep

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

So, some of you may be asking what is a plastic door sweep and what does it do?

Basically, this piece goes onto the bottom of your glass shower door to keep the water inside the shower and to seal it from leaking onto the floor.

  • the side part is angled so that the water runs back into the base of the shower
  • the 2 vinyl or rubber pieces at the bottom make up the double seal (and sweeps the bottom of the door threshold)

Here is what it looks like on our shower door.

And here are the 3 areas that will get dirty with green mildew or even black mold – that you will need to clean.

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

Ok, let’s get to the supplies needed to conquer this job!

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

These are the supplies that I used, and some helpful tips to guide you through the cleaning process.

Supplies:

Helpful Tips:

Tip #1:

If you just can’t seem to get your door sweep clean enough, or would rather buy a replacement:

Tip #2:

If you want to know how to measure your door sweep, or what size to order:

  • click here – this is a very informative article written by pfocus.com.

Tip #3:

  • Here are some measurements that I put together with the information that I learned from the pfocus.com article.

Let’s start out with some before pictures (and hope that you don’t throw up – lol)!!!

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

Yep – #reallife  😉

Disgusting, I know!!

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

Ok, let’s get to the 2 different methods:  how to clean your frameless shower door sweep.

METHOD #1:  CLEANING WITHOUT REMOVING DOOR SWEEP

(2 Easy Steps)

Step #1:   Clean With Paper Towels & Q-Tips

If you don’t want to remove your door sweep, then simply take some paper towels and wipe underneath the angled part – and the 2 vinyl “sweep” parts as well.

  • *NOTE:  I used pictures after I cleaned it….. because it was too hard to see where I was cleaning the strips.  Just wanted to get that out there 🙂

Here is the picture of the angled part using the paper towels.

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

You’ll notice that I used the plural forms for both the paper towels and Q-tips – cleaner beware!  You will need several (of both of these).

Here is the picture of the angled part using the Q-tips.

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

And here is a combination picture just so you can see the 2 different parts that you will have to clean.

  • *NOTE:  This method only cleans 2 parts (shown below).  If you want to clean all 3 parts – go to method #2 also.

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

Step #2:   Clean With Disinfecting (409) Cleaner and Sponge

Now, you will need to clean these 2 parts with some type of bathroom or disinfecting cleaner of your choice.

  • You can also use a toothbrush as well to help get under those tight spots.

(Sorry, I don’t have any pictures because I went ahead and moved on to the method #2).

METHOD #2:  CLEANING WITH REMOVING DOOR SWEEP

(4 Easy Steps)

So, basically I cleaned – using method #1.

And then I realized I could take the door sweep off and clean it this way – method #2 LOL!!

Live and learn – am I right?  But it’s your choice 🙂

Step #1:   Gently Remove Door Sweep & Wipe It Down

Remove your door sweep by gently sliding it off of  your shower door.

  • Have a roll of paper towel ready to go, because a lot of water, slime, mildew, and gunk will come out with it.

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

I went ahead and wiped this inside part (where door goes) with the paper towels -just because it was so gross.

How To Clean Frameless Shower Door Sweep

Step #2:   Fill Sink W/Dish Soap and Scrub Down

Now, just fill your sink with dish soap and hot water, add the door sweep, and scrub it down – GOOD!

Tips:

  • You might want to let it soak for 30 mins-1 hour.
  • Try using an old toothbrush to really get the tricky spots.

After you have cleaned it really well, dry your door sweep off with a rag.

  • I also recommend letting it dry for about 30 minutes to make sure it is completely dry.

Step #3:   Wipe Down Door

While your door sweep is soaking, go ahead and clean the very bottom of your glass shower door.

I know they recommend soft scrub for glass doors, so you can use that and a sponge to clean it off.

Then dry it with a rag so that it is good and dry before putting the clean door sweep back on.

  • You don’t want any extra moisture in there – since you just took all of this time and effort cleaning it. 😉

Step #4:   Put Door Sweep Back Onto Shower Door

Now, all you have to do is slide your beautiful, CLEAN door sweep back on, and move on to the next thing you have to clean today – haha!!

YOU ARE DONE – WOOHOO!!

(Do you think your honey will even notice – lol)!!

Here are some after pictures.

Is Grandmillennial Style the NEW Modern Farmhouse Decor Trend?

Have you noticed that the modern farmhouse decor trend is definitely beginning to shift – a bunch?  There is a little less black and white, and colors are finally beginning to creep back in.  Plus, with the L.O.N.G year that we all have had…. it’s refreshing to see some happy colors emerge again in 2021!  And…. not that modern farmhouse style is completely going out of style, it’s just got some new friends:  Grand Millennial (aka Granny Chic) & Boho Botanical (my own term – lol).  So, who’s ready?  Is Grandmillennial Style The NEW Modern Farmhouse Decor Trend?

  • I just want to say upfront that these are 2021 and 2022 trends that I have either read about, or that I have noticed popping up in stores, photos, or products.
  • And of course, YOU are the one who gets to decide if they are the trends that YOU would like to incorporate into your own home (or not) 😉

Ok, let’s get to it.

Here’s my own version.  It’s really like I’m saying “wasn’t granny chic ALWAYS in style?”  Maybe for me at least anyway 😉

Is Grandmillennial Style The NEW Modern Farmhouse Decor Trend?

First Things First:

  • I’m not saying that Grandmillennial Style is Replacing Modern Farmhouse style, I’m simply asking if it will be the NEW hot decorating trend – Like modern farmhouse was.

Second:

I believe that ” modern” farmhouse isn’t going out-of-style completely, it’s just evolving into other styles.

  • But “farmhouse style” without the modern association – has been around forever.  And it will always have a dedicated and loyal group of followers – no matter what prefix or suffix you add to it.

Ok, just needed to clarify those 2 points before we get into the nitty gritty!!

Is Grandmillennial Style The NEW Modern Farmhouse Decor Trend?

Modern Farmhouse style has been evolving for the last 3-5 years or so into:  boho farmhouse, coastal farmhouse, farmhouse chic, traditional farmhouse, rustic farmhouse, industrial farmhouse (and more – you get the picture ).

And now I believe the current term for the new modern farmhouse style in 2021 is “New Traditional.”

So, here are 3 Decor Style Trends that I see taking off right now.  You can look at the characteristics to see how they differ.

  • And of course, like most people, you’ll probably like traits in all 3 decorating styles.

3 Decor Style Trends:

1)  Modern Farmhouse (New Traditional)

  • Clean Lines
  • Black Fixtures
  • Black and White Color Palette
  • Neutral Upholstery, No Patterns
  • Country or Rustic Appearance
  • More Masculine
  • Heavy w/Wood & Metal Elements
  • Minimalist

2)  Grandmillennial (Granny Chic):

  • Soft Curves
  • Brass or Glass/Crystal Fixtures
  • Use of Soft Colors or Deep, Rich Colors
  • Upholstery w/Color, and Patterns
  • Elegant or Refined Appearance
  • More Feminine
  • Heavy w/Fabric & (Colored) Glass Elements
  • Maximalist

3)  Boho Botanical (My Term):

  • Clean Lines and Soft Curves
  • Gold/Brass, White, and Rattan/Wicker Fixtures
  • Use of Bright Colors or Muted Colors
  • Mixed Upholstery w/Neutrals, and Patterns
  • Casually Elegant Appearance
  • More Feminine and Cheerful
  • Heavy w/Wicker & Rattan Elements
  • Medium-ist (yep, my own word) 😉

If I had to pick an easy way to visualize the “look” of each style, I would say:

  • New Traditional:  Think Studio McGee + Magnolia + Pottery Barn
  • Granny Chic:  Think Ballard Designs + Caitlin Wilson + Thibaut
  • Boho Botanical:  Think Anthropologie + Serena & Lily

But for today’s post I am going to talk about Grandmillenial Style.

I will get to Boho Botanical soon!

Ok, let’s get to it:  Is Grandmillennial Style The NEW Modern Farmhouse Decor Trend?

Is Grandmillennial Style The NEW Modern Farmhouse Decor Trend?

So, I have been noticing more and more of this grandmillennial style showing up on pinterest, tv (Jenna & Hoda), online, and in stores.

  • House Beautiful dubbed this style “Grandmillenial Style” in the fall of 2019 because it has a granny chic  (or “grandma chic”) look and is popular to the millennials age group.

And it’s not new  – (2019) so I’m a little late to the party – haha!

Anyhoo….. let’s get to what is popping up in more homes with this cute, happy trend.

Is Grandmillennial Style The NEW Decor Trend?

10 Grandmillennial Style Decor Essentials:

  1.  Floral/Chintz/Botanical/Block Print Pillows
  2.  Curved/Rounded Furniture
  3.  Less Monochromatic/More Multi-Color Palettes
  4.  Pleated Lamp Shades
  5.  Framed Landscape or Vintage Pictures
  6.  Gold/Brass Accents
  7.  European Furniture Detail
  8.  Round Velvet (Pintuck) & Bolster Pillows
  9.  Wallpaper
  10.  Upholstery or Fabric w/Patterns & Fringe

I have chosen items and pictures that fit my “definition of grandmillenial style,” but feel free to put your own spin on it.

Basically, just think of this style as:

  • collected and/or quirky
  • European English manor meets flea market cottage
  • pattern palooza – fabric, wallpaper, & upholstery
  • traditional furnishings mixed with modern colors or accent pieces

Let’s move on to the 10 Grandmillennial Style Decor Essentials!

 #1:  Floral/Chintz/Botanical/Block Print Pillows

Using florals or chintz is one of the main essentials for decorating in granny chic style.

Here below, the blue and white chintz fabric is used on the pillows and headboard, giving it a modern look.

And even though this room is more subtle in all crisp white, it is filled with tons of texture to create that homey, cottage feeling:

  • shiplap wall/ceiling, beaded chandelier, fringed rug, woven roman shades, and scalloped lamp shade.

#2:  Curved/Rounded Furniture

Curved and rounded furniture is another important grandmillennial style decorating essential.

These barrel chairs (pictured below), rounded (crescent) sofas, and even curved console tables are coming back into style.

A little personal note:

  • My husband actually had a barrel chair when we first met.
  • So we had it, then got rid of it…… then got it back again, and got rid of it again (LOL) – in the 19 years that we’ve been married.

So, needless to say, decorating trends have a way of making the full circle of going and coming back into style.

#3:  Less Monochromatic/More Multi-Color Palettes

Both of these photos below show how the grandmillennial style lovers use multiple colors when decorating (soft and hard surfaces).

  • Below, the fabric colors (soft surfaces) are blue, white, and green while the furniture (hard surfaces) are black, brown, and bronze.

The green plants just help to bring the two color groups together.

Don’t forget about your outdoor entertaining spaces as well.

This photos isn’t exactly granny chic, but uses different old and new furnishings to bring in character (a must-have quality in this style).

  • Below, they chose brighter blues and pinks as the dominant colors, but balanced out the boldness with the tan/gray light pendants, ottoman, table, and legs of the bistro chairs.

Then they added in the yellow lemons and greenery to pop off of the neutral table decoration.

#4:  Pleated Lamp Shades

I remember reading that pleated and tapered lamp shades were going to start trending before covid, but then it was like they were put on hold.

Of course, it was probably that the “world” was actually put on hold….but they are definitely trending now.

  • If you don’t want to commit to the whole “granny chic” look, just try a solid white, cream, or gray pleated lamp shade.

I love both of the ways that Society Social has styled the pleated, patterned lamp shades.

  • The picture above uses them with a more modern vignette, and the picture below uses them in a more granny chic vignette.

#5:  Framed Landscape or Vintage Pictures

Think English country manor or southern cottage style here – a feeling of “collected over time.”

  • These pictures can be of landscapes, country homes, European villas,  and portraits (like below).
  • Go with black, or dark frames for a more masculine look or go with gold, or lighter-colored frames for a more feminine look.

#6:  Gold/Brass Accents

Gold and brass is basically everywhere right now.

I love how people are mixing it in with black, bronze, and stainless/brushed nickel metals throughout their homes.

  • Try it on mirrors, frames, hardware, light fixtures, vent hoods, and on furniture.

  • Don’t forget about gold lampshades, curtain rods, or gold trim detail also – like the gold trim on the barrel chair below.

#7:  European Furniture Detail

This master bedroom is simply stunning.

It is more soothing than some of the other grandmillennial – styled rooms, but incorporates the use of European furniture detail beautifully.

Did you find them all?

  • the accent chairs, the bench, the headboard, the sconce, the accent table, the mirror, and even the fireplace.

#8:  Round Velvet (Pintuck) & Bolster Pillows

This picture is more coastal/modern farmhouse style, but I just wanted to show you how to incorporate the vintage round velvet pillow into your existing decor.

You can see how easy it is to use just one or two elements of grandmillennial style, without completely committing to the look.

Bolsters Pillows are also making a comeback.

  • Try using them on the ends of living room sofas, entry way benches, or on daybeds.
  • You can also try one long bolster in your bedroom.

They don’t have to be in crazy, patterned fabric either.

  • You could always try a simple, striped pattern like the one pictured below, or even a plain, solid velvet bolster.

#9:  Wallpaper

Isn’t this room by Ballard Designs, just the most adorable room ever?  How could you walk into this dining room and NOT smile?

I love how the bold boho style flowers in the wallpaper blend effortlessly with the classic blue painted china cabinet and blue lamp shades.

It’s a great mix of fun + funky + functional.  Look at that incredible light pendant – so cute!

source: ballarddesigns.com

I just had to include this stunning combination by Thibaut also.

Here the colors stay in the blue and white color palette only, but blend different patterns in the wallpaper, the chair fabric, and the antique collectibles on the campaign dresser.

Plus, I just happen to have a similar mirror.  Click Faux Bamboo Mirror in Recommended Posts below to see it.

#10:  Upholstery or Fabric w/Patterns & Fringe

Remember, this is the perfect style for the maximalist.

  • Try different colors while mixing large and small patterns to keep the eye moving from piece to piece.
  • Go Subtle: using the same pattern over and over again.
  • Go Bold: using different patterned curtains, bedding, rugs, or wallpapered accent wall.
Is Grandmillennial Style the NEW Modern Farmhouse Decor Trend?
source: caitlinwilson.com

Fringe is back – what??  Yes, definitely on furniture and accessories.

But fringe doesn’t have to be limited to fabric, upholstery, or pillows to get this grandmillennial look.

  • Try fringed lamps or even light pendants, like the one below.
  • Go bold with brighter colors, or go subtle with whites or tans.

Well, what do you think?  Is this Grandmillennial Style trend something you will give a try?  Let me know.

Have a Great Summer!!

Love & Hugs 🙂

Common Questions:

#1)  So, what is the difference between rattan, bamboo and cane furniture – anyway?

Well, I did a little digging and found a great article from verybamboo.com.  Click here to read more about the different types in detail.

Basically:

  • Bamboo is a type of grass where Rattan is a type of palm tree.
  • Rattan vines are hollow while Bamboo has a solid core.
  • Bamboo grows straight while Rattan vines bend.
  • Cane is the outer skin of the rattan vine, and is used to tie/bind pieces together.

I just wanted to share those details with you, so that you have a little better idea of the terms.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that you or I are now experts on the subject (LOL!!), buy hey, it’s interesting – so why not learn something new?

Whitewash Furniture DIY: Coffee Table Makeover

I am so excited to share this new whitewash painting technique and coffee table makeover with you!  If you’ve been to the blog before, you know that I love to paint.  I have already painted our master bedroom dresser and bed frame in another whitewash/dry-brushed method, and today I’ll be showing you how to whitewash your coffee table (with the new method).  Plus, there are tons of helpful tips and pictures to guide you through the process and make it easy as possible.  Here is Whitewash Furniture DIY:  Coffee Table Makeover.

Scroll to the very end of the post to see:

  • the before and after pictures of our coffee table
  • the 2 whitewashing methods pictures (together)

Supplies:

Here are some pictures of the primer and paint that I used.

Whitewash Furniture DIY: Coffee Table Makeover

Quick Questions/Answers:

#1:  What kind of paint do you use for whitewashing?

I use satin, latex paint for both of my white-washing techniques:

  • Latex is much easier to clean with soap and water, and you can dilute the paint if you want more of a washed on/wiped on look.  (I did not dilute my paint for this technique).
  • Satin paint also wipes down easier when cleaning scuff marks.

#2:  Do you sand your furniture before whitewash painting?

I did not sand my coffee table before painting:

  •  I primed the coffee table so that I do not have to sand it beforehand.
  •  If you don’t prime your wood furniture, you’ll need to sand it – trust me!

#3:  What level of difficulty is this particular painting job?

This is a intermediate-difficult painting job/method:

  • This is not for the beginner painter – sorry!
  • This whitewashing technique will take at least 4 days.  Don’t rush it!
  • The different layers of primer, paint, dark wax, sanding, clear wax – will give you that “weathered-layered-whitewashed” look.
  • See below painting cheat sheet/playbook.

You got this – let’s get to it!!

Whitewash Furniture DIY: Coffee Table Makeover

8 Steps:

  1.   Prime – 2 Coats
  2.   Paint White
  3.   Dark Wax/Glaze
  4.   Clear Wax
  5.   Paint Again
  6.   Clear Wax Again
  7.   Sand
  8.   Clear Wax –  Final Time

Cheat Sheet/Painting Playbook:

  • Day 1:  prep and prime 2 coats (let dry)
  • Day 2:  paint (let dry), add dark wax (let dry)
  • Day 3:  add clear wax (buff), and paint again (let dry)
  • Day 4:  add clear wax, sand/distress, add clear wax again

Ok, let’s get to the tutorial!  Whitewash Furniture DIY:  Coffee Table Makeover.

Whitewash Furniture DIY: Coffee Table Makeover

Here are  a couple of before pictures of our black farmhouse coffee table so you can see what it used to look like.

  • The first thing you will want to do is wipe down your coffee table with a rag.  (This will help clean off all of  the dust and grime that has collected over time).
  • Next, remove the hardware and drawers.
  • Then go ahead and put down a drop cloth underneath it to protect your floor from primer/paint.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Step #1:  Prime (2 coats)

Now it’s time to prime your coffee table using your 2″ angled paint brush.

  • Tip #1:  Always make sure to stir your primer before you begin, and remove drawers if you have any.
  • Tip #2:  You can use your more “budget-friendly” paintbrush for the primer also – instead of your more expensive brush.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

I also like to prop up my furniture on some old wood blocks or paint cans – just to lift it up off of the floor.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

I like to leave some of my darker furniture color (black) poking through a little, so I do not completely cover it.

*Let it dry for about an hour before adding the 2nd coat.

Here it is with the primer – 1st coat.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

After you have let it dry for an hour, go ahead and add a second coat of the primer.

In the picture below, the left side has the 2nd coat of primer on it, and the right side only has the 1st coat of primer.

I just wanted to show you the difference.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Here below, is the picture with the 2nd coat of primer.

Scroll back up so that you can see the difference in the 1st coat of primer picture, and this 2nd coat of primer picture.  Can you see the difference?

*Let the 2nd primer coat – dry overnight.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Step #2:  Paint White (one coat)

Now that you have let your coffee table dry overnight, it’s time to paint it with your white paint.

I used Behr Swiss Coffee for this whitewash method, because I wanted it to have a creamier-tan base.

This step requires only one coat of paint.

*Let Dry at least 4 hours.

In the picture below, you can see that the front part of the lower shelf has been painted, and the back part has not been painted.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Now, if you scroll back up to the 2nd coat of primer picture, you can tell that the color now has a creamier-white appearance.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Step #3:  Add Dark Wax

Taking you economy brush (or wax brush), go ahead and add the dark wax to your coffee table.  Then wipe it off with your t-shirt or rag.

  • Tip #3:  It is easier to begin on the bottom shelf (if you have one), so that you don’t rub off your wax/glaze on the top shelf.
  • Tip #4:  Completely cover a small section at a time, so it wipes off easier.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

You won’t want to wipe the wax completely off, but just leave some stroke marks  – kind of like wood grain.

And remember to wipe in the direction of the wood grain of your table.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Don’t forget to get under the top “lip” of your coffee table and the sides also.

I’m sure you already knew this, but I’ve definitely skipped some spots – trust me!! LOL!!

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Once you’ve double (or triple) checked yourself, go ahead and add the dark wax to the top section now.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Like I mentioned above, just remember to always wipe off in the direction of the wood grain.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

And here is what it will look like at this stage.

*Let this dry overnight.  Don’t rush this step for sure.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Step #4:  Add Clear Wax

Once you’re dark wax has dried overnight, it’s time to add the clear wax.

This is an easy step – finally!!

Just apply the clear wax with your sponge (or brush), let it sit for 15-30 mins, and then wipe it off with a rag.

It should buff out to a little shimmer/sheen when you are done.

*Let this dry 30 minutes or go directly into the next step.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Step #5:  Paint Again (dry brush)

Hang in there!!  I know that this is just about the time that you’re starting to get a little annoyed with the process, but you’re on the home stretch.

You can begin this step almost right after step #4 – adding clear wax.

Now you will use the Swiss Coffee White paint again, but just keep your brush dry.

Basically, you will dip your brush into your paint, wipe it off on a rag, and then brush it on in streaks.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

You will keep dry-brushing the paint on in streaks until you achieve the “whitewash” color you want.

This process WILL take a little while – just a FYI.  It’s not difficult, but does require some time.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

I wanted my table to have a layered look, so I kept adding more white paint to achieve that “washed” appearance.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Here is what it will look like after I kept adding more…. and more paint.  See how the dark wax “look” peeks through the white – in streaks?

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

And it has a “golden tan” kind of color.  Very soft and subtle -right?

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

What a difference!  Here it is before I did the drawers.  The drawer looks so tan against the whitewash table.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

*Let this dry overnight.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Step #6:  Clear Wax (again)

You will use the same method as before for applying wax, let it sit for 30 minutes, and then buff it off with a rag.

  • If you are happy with your table at this step, or don’t want it sanded/distressed, you are done.

If not go right into step #7:  sanding.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Step #7:  Sand

For this part, take a 150-grit piece of sandpaper, and gently sand the coffee table and drawers.

This will work best if you sand down edges and corners in random sections so that it’s looks naturally scuffed.

Then sand down the top and bottom shelves too.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Remember how I said in the beginning that I wanted some of my black to show through?  This is where it ties all together.

Now, if WHEN it gets bumped or scratched – it will just look more “loved!!”

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

Step #8:  Wax – Final Time

Add your clear wax, let it sit 30 minutes, and buff off to your preferred sheen.

*I recommend waiting 72 hours before putting anything on TOP of your coffee table.

…..And You are Done!!

Add some fun gold knobs for a coastal farmhouse/boho look….. or add some rubbed-oiled bronze or black hardware pulls for a modern farmhouse/cottage style look.

whitewash furniture diy: coffee table makeover

What do you think?  I love all of the movement and “layers” it has  – to give it that weathered and whitewash look!

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

When you see pictures of gorgeous Christmas trees with the perfectly wrapped presents underneath, do you ever wonder how they pulled it all together?  It all looks so elegant and yet still SO effortless – all at the same time (ugh)!   They must be sprinkling some magic fairy dust – right??  Nope – just a little planning.  So I’ve put together 6 easy tips and ideas to help you coordinate your holiday tree color palette (or theme) with your wrapping paper and tags.  Plus, hopefully it will save you time next year (when you change up all of the colors – lol)!!   6 Best Christmas Wrapping Tips & Ideas.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

Just a couple of reminders for all of us:

  • Don’t be too hard on yourself when wrapping presents.  They are given in an act of love, and that’s what really matters!
  • Keep wrapping choices simple.  The more you choose, the more decisions you have to make.
  • Set up a designated time – just for wrapping gifts.  Maybe 2 or 3 evenings (then you can add wine)!

Let’s get to it!  6 Best Christmas Wrapping Tips & Ideas.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

6 Best Tips & Ideas:

  1.  Choose 3-4 Coordinating Wrapping Paper Rolls
  2.  Pick 1-2 Ribbon Colors
  3.  Make Homemade Coordinating Gift Tags
  4.  Choose Boxes In Multiple Shapes & Sizes
  5.  Coordinate with Tree Color or Theme
  6.  Use as Decoration on Coffee Tables, Benches, & Baskets

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

TIP #1:  Choose 3-4 Coordinating Wrapping Paper Rolls

The first thing you will want to do is choose your wrapping paper colors and/or theme.

My color scheme this year is white, green, and navy, and my theme is “tree love.”  See picture below.

  • 1  solid color (green)
  • 1 pattern (brown and green tree)
  • 1 neutral (white and black tree)

Of course, a more general theme might be “winter wonderland,” etc.

And it’s really more of a mood/tone of your decoration – mixed with a certain color palette.

With 3 choices:  Simple & Classic

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

With 4 choices:  Rustic Wood Bark

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

With 4 choices:  Glam Gold Dot

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

The 3 paper choices works best for the minimalist style, while the 4 paper choices works best for the maximalist style.

  • The 4th Wood Bark choice adds some texture – while keeping things neutral or rustic.
  • Whereas the 4th Gold Dot choice adds metallic shimmer – bringing in a touch of glam or elegance.

I just wanted to show you the difference of adding in that “fourth choice” of wrapping paper.

TIP #2:  Pick 1-2 Ribbon Colors

Now that you have chosen your wrapping paper, it’s time to choose ribbon colors.

I have chosen white and navy  ribbons for mine to help coordinate with my wrapping paper and tree (color palette).

  • Choose One Color for minimalist style.
  • Choose Two Colors for maximalist style.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

Just to note maximalist style doesn’t mean “crazy” style, but just simply a “busier” look.

I should have added a third option:

  • Choose 3 ribbon colors + different sizes  = Jael’s style (hahaha!!)
  • I definitely like a busy (+ crazier look) and have to “clean things up” a little so it doesn’t get out-of- hand!!

Here are some presents wrapped with the 3 wrapping paper choices + 3 ribbon choices:  white, navy, AND jute.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

TIP #3:  Make Homemade Coordinating Gift Tags

The easiest way to coordinate your wrapping paper and gift tags is you make your own (tags) with leftover paper or scrapbook paper.

Plus, it is very budget-friendly and can be a great family project for you and your kiddos.  (Yep – means more wine – lol)!!

I won’t go into a ton of detail on this part, but you can click DIY Birch Tree Gift Tags:  Using Toilet Paper Rolls to see the tutorial and learn how to make these.

And of course – they tie in with my tree theme.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas
source: thetarnishedjewelblog.com

Here below you can see that I made a tree gift tag from the green paper also – just to tie in the green again.

And the birch bark (scrapbook) paper coordinates with the wood bark wrapping paper.

(P.S. – I would have used the wood bark wrapping paper for the gift tags, but I’ve got another project in the works and needed it for that). 😉

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

TIP #4:  Choose Boxes In Multiple Shapes & Sizes

When you are wrapping gifts, try to use boxes that are different shapes and sizes (if you can).

I know that some items already come in a designated box, and that makes life SO much easier!  But for some of those other items, choose a variety of box styles and sizes.

In the picture below, you can see how the different sizes play well with each other when stacking upright.

This works perfect for the side areas of the tree and back of the tree.  We’ll see how this comes together in Step #5:  (under Presentation).

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

In this next picture, you can see that this grouping sits lower and works great for the front area of the tree (also in Step #5).

This will also work perfectly if you need to wrap 2 or 3 gifts together – as one gift.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

TIP #5:  Coordinate with Tree Color or Theme

Now it’s time to “decorate” the bottom of your tree!  This is where all of your planning and color coordinating finally come together!

You can see that I have a green and white tree (and gold) tree, but a navy and white color palette in our living room.

So how can I pull the tree theme, green, and wood “birch bark” styles together in here?

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

Add a Solid-Colored Tree Skirt:

The first thing to do is begin with a solid-colored tree skirt.  It provides the base (or anchor) of the tree.

I chose a ivory/cream-colored tree skirt for my tree – which helps unify the tree, gifts, and the entire room’s color palette.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

Pop of Color:  Blue

So even though I didn’t need a ton of navy for the tree (with the louder curtains), I wanted to add a pop of blue just to tie the tree and room together.

  • You may have a different color in your room, so just use a ribbon that unifies the room and tree.
  • Even neutral-colored ribbons like gold, silver, or burlap – add a pop of color.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

Presentation:

And we have all heard that presentation is everything – right??

It’s amazing how the entire look of the tree changes once those gifts are added.

Presentation and gift placement – now become the main attraction of the room, by bringing the focal point to the tree itself (especially at the base).

  • This is where those gift boxes in different sizes and shapes really come together – when stacking.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

And I do LOVE  my patterns!  But the solid-colored gifts really are essential to pulling the tree and room together as one.

To the Left Side:

  • By spreading out the solid- colored green gifts, the eye has a place to rest at the bottom of the tree.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

And now you can see how the ribbons really bring out the wrapping paper choices, while coordinating with the room color palette.

To the Right Side:

  • The white ribbon coordinates with the white and black tree wrapping paper, and
  • The jute string coordinates with the brown and green tree wrapping paper.

I love it when everything finally comes together and you have your Ta-Da moment!

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

TIP #6:  Use as Decoration on Coffee Tables, Benches, & Baskets

So, who says that your beautifully wrapped gifts HAVE to be put under the tree?

Why can’t you place some faux presents (or real if you want) as decoration around the house?

You can use some of the lower groupings on your coffee table, entry console table, or even a bedroom dresser.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

Stack some presents on benches in the living room, entry, or even guest bedroom.

They will add a punch of color and little extra playfulness to the room.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

Add some ornaments or greenery to tie your Christmas tree, mantel, and entire room together.

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

6 Best Christmas Gift Wrapping Tips & Ideas

You can even place them onto woven trays in your master bedroom, or tuck a couple into storage baskets in your entry.

Just a little “fluff” will really pull your entire Holiday Home together.
