How To Paint Your Bathroom Vanity (In 5 Easy Steps)

If you have been to the blog before, then you know that our house flooded in 2017.  So our entire downstairs was completely renovated with all new paint/trim colors.  BUT….. the upstairs was not.  So I began the painting project (ceilings, doors, trim and closets) myself 5 years ago, and just never got around to doing the girls Jack-n-Jill Baths – until now!!  And I know you can do it too!   Let’s get to it!  How To Paint Your Bathroom Vanity (In 5 Easy Steps).

First Things First:

Before we get started, I just wanted to let you know there is no big reveal on this makeover (not yet – sorry)!

  • I’m calling it Phase I of our Jack-n-Jill bathroom makeover.
  • Which essentially is all of the painting.

Since we are now officially empty nesters, I’m beginning some of the projects that have been on my “to do” list for awhile.

  • And the girls Jack-n-Jill bathroom – is the first one on that list because they are both gone to college right now.

But I do want you to know that this is a project you can do too – which will save you money – from having to higher a painter.  And every bit helps – right?!

Ok, let’s get to it!  How To Paint Your Bathroom Vanity (In 5 Easy Steps).

Supplies:

*If you use oil-based paint, you will need an oil-based cleaner for your brush & hands.

**(If you use latex paint, you will only need soap and water).

Ok, Let’s get to the 5 Easy Steps!

5 Steps:

  1.   Clean and Prep Area
  2.   Paint Inside Vanity Cabinet
  3.   Paint Outside Vanity Cabinet
  4.   Paint Doors
  5.   Paint Drawers

Clarification/Time Frame:

  • I painted 2 vanities  – so there will be pictures of both in our Jack-n-Jill bathroom.
  • This is Phase I of our bathroom refresh – so a bigger reveal will come in stages.
  • Paint time:  ~ 1 1/2 hours to paint each vanity cabinet – (our vanities are 42″W and 48″W)
  • 2 day project

Ok, carry on to the 5 easy steps.

5 Steps

Step #1:  Clean and Prep Area

  • The first thing you will want to do is remove any hardware.
  • Then you will give your bathroom vanity cabinet a very good clean – inside and out.
  • Next you will prep your painting area.

I used 409 and a sponge to get all of the grime left by our girls.

It’s amazing how much gunk can be left by such small people – right?

But now they are big people…. and they still leave a mess – just makeup gunk! LOL!

I also recommend removing the drawers is possible – just in case things are left behind – like these socks I found. πŸ˜‰

Which I have to admit that I had a small cry – since we are now officially empty nesters this year.  And wow does it go by way too fast. πŸ™

Then set up your painter’s drop cloth + painting supplies, and get your painting clothes on.

Step #2: Paint Inside Vanity Cabinet

Now it’s time to paint.

You will want to begin painting inside the vanity – the back wall first – with all of the plumbing fixtures.

This is what I recommend:

  • (1) Use your brush to paint around all of the fixtures on the back wall first.
  • (2) Then paint the corners and edges on tops, sides, and bottom (pic with arrows).
  • (3) Next use your roller brush for all of the other areas.

TIP:  It’s like making a square with your paint brush, then filling in the square with the roller brush.

Then you’ll be able to roll all of the others areas, and it will go by much faster.

This is what the inside will look like at this stage.

Step #3:  Paint Outside Vanity Cabinet

You will notice that I did not use painter’s tape for this part, but I would highly recommend it here – if your vanity bumps up to your wall.  I didn’t tape because I think I’m wonder woman (eye roll- lol!).

This is what I recommend:

  • (1) Start with the sides and top first – using your paintbrush.
  • (2) Then paint the drawers with your roller brush (horizontally & vertically).
  • (3) Next paint the cabinet front between the doors.

Here’s the LEFT side and front.

Then you’ll roll the drawers horizontally + vertically.

TIP:  I learned this tip from a painter – using a roller brush eliminates brush mark strokes – for a cleaner “sprayed on paint look.”  It definitely works, so I highly recommend it πŸ˜‰

And yes, don’t forget to go back and “catch” those paint drips around the drawers with your paint brush.

And now paint in between the doors.

Step #4:  Paint Doors

You’re getting close to the end – hang in there!

This is what I recommend:

  • (1)  Paint the sides and top of the doors – using your paint brush.
  • (2)  Then paint the door fronts – using your paint brush.
  • (3)  Next paint the door front –  with your roller brush (horizontally + vertically).
  • (4)  Now paint the inside of the door – repeat with roller brush.

Step #5:  Paint Drawers

Last step – woohoo!

Now I will be honest and tell you that these drawers are little stinkers – ugh!  But it’s the last step and a glass of wine is waiting for you πŸ˜‰

This is what I recommend:

  • (1)  Start with the inside portions of your drawer – brush first, then roller brush.
  • (2)  Next paint the sides – brush first, then roller brush.
  • (3)  Finish with the drawer fronts – once put back into the slots.

Here are the sides.

Now you will carefully place your drawers back into their slots, and paint the fronts.

TIPS:

  • Make sure you DON’T close the drawers – all of the way – so you don’t mess up the paint.
  • If you’re drawers are close to the wall like mine, then you will have to paint that side of the drawer first (so you have room to get the paint brush in that space).

In the picture below, this is where I noticed that there wasn’t any room to paint that LEFT side.  So I just pulled the drawer out and painted that left side first.

Good News:  You are Done with the first coat (if you only have one vanity).

Bad News:  You have to go paint the other vanity’s first coat (if you have two vanities).

  • And of course we have two – ugh!!

Sadie’s After – Painted

  • I worked on straightening that left cabinet door for over an hour……and it’s still crooked!!
  • But…. she just confessed that it’s crooked because she props her legs on it to put on her “tanning cream.”
  • Like I said – Big people issues now!!
