First Things First:

I have to start out by saying that I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with these 2 gold window frames.

Turn Old Window Frames Into Modern Gold Mirrors

I thought about adding some botanical prints or even adding some fabric, but then inspiration struck!!

My friend (SP) just finished her gorgeous new remodel and what did she just happen to have??

  • Yep – SP has gorgeous gold paned mirrors!
  • I told her that I was going to have to copy her fresh and hip style, and come up with a plan to turn my 2 gold frames into 2 modern mirrors.  So, thank you SP!!

Second:

Now that I had my plan, how was I going to actually execute this plan?

So today, I’ll answer some of these common questions you may have as well like:

  1.  How do I attach the mirrors to the window frame?
  2.  Where do I find the mirrors for the window panes?
  3.  What kind of hardware do I need to hang the mirrored frames?

And of course, if you just don’t have the time or desire to DIY, then check out the list of links below.

*The number of poster boards will depend on how many window frames you’re doing, and if you’re using them as the backing.  (See Steps 2 & 5).

Step 1:  Remove Glass & Clean Mirror & Step 2:  Paint Mirror With Gold Spray Paint

For these 2 steps, click DIY Spray Painting Old Window Frames Gold

  • I’ll show you how to remove the old glass, clean and paint window frames gold, and how to install the hanging hardware onto the back of the frame.

Once you have this part finished, you’ll move on to Step 3.

Step 3:  Measure Window Panes

When I went to get my mirrors cut, they told me that these “old” windows are hand cut, (back in the day) which makes cutting these mirrors individually more difficult.

  • As a result, I went back home and measured each pane (yes – ugh)!

So, this is kind of a 2 part-step here:

  1.   Measure each pane & make poster board templates.
  2.   Label each frame – separately.

#1)  Measure each pane & make poster board template.

Basically, you will turn your frame over and measure the back side of each pane – like in the picture below.

(Can you see the two spots that I missed with the gold paint- lol)??  Always fixin’ things!!

Measure the inside area of those “lips or edges” – width and length (it’s where your mirrors will go).

Now, take your poster board, mark the measurements, and cut out each template.

  • Each one of my windowpanes was ~ 10″ x 12.”
  • Each window frame had 6 panes each.
  • It took 3 poster board pieces to do my 12 windowpane templates for both window frames.

TIP #1:

  • MAKE SURE THEY FIT INTO EACH PANE.
  • If they don’t, just trim it off until it does.

#2)  Label each template – separately.

Basically, this is the system I came up with so that I knew which side was going to be my:

  • TOP – where my d-rings are (hanging hardware)
  • My 1-2-3 are labeled at the top
  • BOTTOM – opposite side of top (of course – lol)
  • MY 4-5-6 are labeled at the bottom

TIP #2:

  • Measure each FRAME separately – like picture below.
  • No 2 antique window frames are exactly the same.
  • I’ll explain in step #4.

Step 4:  Get Mirrors Cut

This is where the entire project went south – BADLY – so that is why I am really stressing the importance of doing those templates.

I read on several other posts to get these mirrors cut at Lowes because they cut them for free.  Yay!

  • So, I bought 2 mirrors –  24″ x 30″ because each one of my panes was roughly 10″ x 12.”

But then the guy at Lowe’s was extremely upset because……well when he started measuring –  he noticed that Each.Single.Pane was a different dimension.  NO!!!

***The following italicized portion is how my project when south – just so you don’t have to go through it also.

Long story short…..

  • I left Lowe’s because he was A JERK about it
  • Next, I bought my own box of mirror tiles and you-tubed cutting mirrors – DIY – total failure!!
  • Out of my first box of 6 mirror tiles, I broke 3, got 1 to work, and THEN cried 🙁
  • See pic below of epic failure with mirror tiles.
  • Went back home and did all of the measurements like I recommended in step #3
  • Then returned to Lowe’s and the manager ended up cutting them for FREE (including comping the 2 mirrors fee) because of the awful customer service by the mirror cutter
  • Thank You Lowe’s Manager – James – for your kind heart!!
EPIC FAIL (CUTTING MIRROR TILES MYSELF):

It took me about 2 -3 hours to realize that I was NOT going to be able to DIY these!

Step 5:  Attach Mirrors/Backing To Window Frames

Moving on!  Once I brought all of my 12 mirrors home, it was time to put them into each spot.

Except that they did NOT put the labels back on – NO NOT AGAIN!!!

So, it took me about 3 hours – YEP – 3 HOURS – to figure out which one went into each spot.

  • And you guessed it, EACH one had it’s OWN SPOT!!

Even if they just would have put the 6 cut mirrors that matched the A-frame, or 6 mirrors that matched the B-frame, it would have saved me so much time.

TIP #3:

Make for sure they either use your labels or mark which mirror goes into each pane – TRUST ME!

Hopefully, you’ll get lucky and get a nice mirror cutter OR you might decide just to pay for a glass cutter to cut these professionally.

BACKING:

But after I figured it all out, it was time to put the backing on to keep the mirrors intact.

I decided to use cake boards because they were the perfect size – so that I could make 2 backings/per cake board.

You can always just use an old box.

  • I do recommend using cardboard though because you will want to make sure that the mirrors fit snugly into their spots.

*You can tell from the picture below that I actually did this step – along with step #2 (poster board labeling).

  • It is easier to do at that stage because the mirrors aren’t inserted yet, but I just wanted to keep the sequence of the steps in order – for the post.

So, it’s up to you!

This is what it will look like at this stage.

Step  6:  Add Hardware To Backing/Mirrors & Hang Mirrors

Now that you have the backing on, it’s time to add the hardware to secure the backing and mirrors to the window frames (the hanging hardware is done in steps 1 & 2).

I used these offset clips and glazing points to secure the cardboard cake boards to the window frames.

GLAZING POINTS:

The glazing points are a little tricky to figure out, but once you get the hang of it, they go quickly.

  1.   Start with glazing point (prongs facing upwards).
  2.   Face arrow towards frame edge, sitting directly on mirror.
  3.   Take your putty knife and push it firmly into your wooden frame, to keep the mirrors in place.
  4.   Repeat around the mirror (maybe 6-8/mirror).

Be careful so that you don’t break your mirrors!!!

OFFSET CLIPS:

Once you have secured your mirrors with the glazing points, it’s time to secure the cardboard backings with the offset clips.

I used 2 on each side, and 3 on the bottom, and 1 top middle.

And then I added a poster board to the back, secured with duct tape for extra protection.
