DIY Bird Nests & Candle Holders

If you are wondering how to make your own mini bird nests or candle holders, you’re in the right spot. I decided to go with a “shades of blue” and all things “egg” theme for our Easter Table setting this year and was hoping to find egg-shaped candles. Last year I used the lavender/berry egg candles, and was so excited when I found the blue egg candles this year. So, I thought it would be cute if these blue egg candles had mini bird nests or candle holders to accent them. And the love story began……DIY Bird Nests & Candle Holders.

Just a FYI: There are two homemade versions (bird nests – with moss), and (candle holders or rings – without moss). But technically both can be used as candle holders – for spring centerpieces, Easter tablescapes, or even table decorations.

I have to admit that these are so easy & simple, it seems almost ridiculous to list this as a tutorial – but here goes!

Ok, so this post will show you how to make 2 different versions:

One without moss (left below) and one with moss (right below).

I will also show you 3 different styling options for these: scroll to the end of the post to see pictures.

Just wanted to clarify so that it doesn’t get too confusing – lol!

DIY Bird Nests & Candle Holders

I purchased my mini grapevine wreaths (set of 6), wire leaf garland, and green moss from Hobby Lobby. But you can always look at Amazon, Michael’s, or Walmart also.

These supplies make 4 candle holders. If you are making more than 4, I recommend buying (2) leaf garland strips.

Supplies:

3″ Mini grapevine wreaths – set of 6 or 4″ wreaths here – set of 12
(1 or 2) Mini wire leaf garland
Scissors
Green moss – for bird nests

Ok, let’s get to it! DIY Bird Nests & Candle Holders.

DIY Candle Holders

For Candle Holders: no moss

Step #1: Cut Wire Leaf Garland Into 4 Strips

The first thing you will do is cut the wire leaf garland in half – so that you will have 2 strips.

Then you’ll cut each strip in half – so that you will have 4 strips.

TIP: The easiest way to do this, is to unwrap the garland, fold/bend it in half, then cut in the middle fold. And repeat for each strip to make 4 strips.

Step #2: Wind Garland Around Mini Wreath

Now you will simply wind the leaf garland in and out of each mini wreath.

That’s it – you are done with the candle holder part.

Super easy – right? The garland adds just a little whimsy and garden-like touch to the plain grapevine wreaths.

These would make adorable candle rings around taper candles, or even work great as napkin rings – just throwing those out there. Wink-Wink!!

DIY Bird Nests

For Bird Nests: with moss

I chose green moss for my bird nests, so that it would coordinate (and look more authentic) – with the green leaf garland.

Feel free to use more muted colors like tan and gray moss too.
Feel free to add more moss or use larger wreath sizes as needed.

Step #3: Add Moss To Top of Wreath

Pictured below: One to the left – without moss, one to the right – with moss.

Now, you can just pick which one you like more, and let the creativity begin!

Ok, now let’s get to some different styling options!! Yes, please!

Styling Options

Styling Option Supplies:

Egg Candles (found mine at Dollar Tree): Similar 2.75″ here, 2.5″ here, or 1.75″ here
White Cupcake Stands: Similar ceramic here – set of 4, or wooden here – single
Shades of Blue Plastic Eggs – I found mine at Target

Mini Cupcake Stands:

I found mine at Target last year (sorry!), and use them all of the time to elevate items and create different levels.

I have the cupcake stands shown with the candle holder version, but you can use them with the bird nests version too!

Just have fun with them!

Option 1 – With Blue Egg Candles:

Option 2 – With Large and Small Plastic Eggs + LED Tea Lights:

***DO NOT USE BURNING FLAME CANDLES – Only LED (flameless) with this option!!!***

Otherwise the plastic egg WILL catch on fire.
I did not have any LED tea lights on hand to show you – sorry – but I just wanted to give you the general idea.
You can use glass votives inside of them to stay safe.
