Ok, let’s get to this super easy 4-step tutorial: DIY Heart Napkin Rings: Valentine’s Day Decor.
DIY Heart Napkin Rings: Valentine’s Day Decor
Step #1: Cut Paper Towel Roll Into Rings
The first you will do is cut your empty paper towel rolls into rings.
My “rings” width measure around 3/4″ – 7/8″ – which is slightly less than 1″w.
Just a couple of TIPS for this 1st step:
- you can mark your measurements onto your paper towel roll if you prefer
- remember that you will want your rings to be slightly smaller than your ribbon width
- do not press too hard or flatten your paper towel roll when cutting
My paper towel roll made 4 rings + 6 hearts, but you can also make more.
Step #2: Trace & Cut Out Hearts – Paper Towel Roll
After you have cut out the number of rings that you want, you will want to cut the remaining part of your paper towel roll length-wise.
Lay the paper towel roll flat (or as flat as you can – lol), and trace your cookie cutter heart onto the roll with a pencil.
- I went ahead and used all of my paper towel roll, just so I could make extra hearts to sprinkle onto the table.
Step #3: Trace, Cut, & Glue Hearts – Wrapping Paper
Now that you have all of your paper towel rings and hearts cut out, it’s time to trace the hearts onto wrapping paper.
- Feel free to use scrapbook paper, construction paper, or any other decorative paper you have on hand.
TIP: Just make sure your paper “print” is smaller, so that it fits onto your heart in the right place.
You will trace your hearts, cut them out, and glue them onto your cardboard heart with a glue stick.
- I chose a glue stick so it wouldn’t get too messy, but liquid glue or glue dots would work also.
- I wouldn’t recommend hot glue for this part though because it will cause bumps in the paper.
Optional Step: Laminating
If you have any packing tape on hand, you can use it to faux “laminate” your hearts.
I do this quite a bit with other paper crafts around the house, because the tape helps protect items from possible water damage or tearing.
Of course, it’s not full-proof – haha! – but when you have kids……. ๐
Just pull some packing tape out, try to cover the entire heart if you can, then cut of the excess. Easy-Peasy!
I only laminated the top part, but feel free to do both sides if you want to.
Step #4: Glue Ribbon & Hearts Onto Rings
Now that you have finished the heart part, it’s time to “pretty up” those napkin rings.
Trial Run:
- Here below is a picture of the bare rings on 2 napkins, just so I could do a trial run of what they would look like (& how they would fit).
- And if you are going for a little bit more of a rustic look, you could leave as is.
RIBBON:
I used 7/8″ white groisgrain ribbon for my rings because I had a lot of this on hand.
TIPS:
- You can use any color that coordinates with your heart “paper,” or even use burlap.
- Just make for sure that your ribbon is a little wider than your ring – so that it covers it.
- Make for sure that your heart rings coordinate with your napkin color also.
Lay your ribbon onto the ring to double check the width.
This way, you can easily cut off some of the paper towel ring width if some of your cutting lines were crooked – LOL!!
Now, you will simply put hot glue onto the ring, and glue down your ribbon. Just cut off the excess where it meets.
HEART:
Add a drop of hot glue on the center of the ring and press down the heart for about 10-15 seconds so that it adheres well.
YOU ARE DONE!
Just slide them onto your napkins and break out the champagne!
- Even though I didn’t end up using these beautiful napkins that my mom (AKA Gabbi) personalized for us, I just had to show them!
Aren’t they so sweet – maybe for Easter????
And since my Valentine’s Day tablescape (Post Coming Soon) is aqua and coral, these spa-colored napkins fit perfectly.
I hope you found some ideas and inspiration to create something beautiful for your own home!
Happy Valentine’s Day!!
