6 Simple Decorating Ideas: Fall Home Tour 2020

6 simple decorating ideas: fall home tour 2020

I am so excited to share our fall home tour this year, (probably more than ever) just so we can pretend that things are somewhat returning to normal.  It has been a long 6 months for everyone, and I feel that we all need the comfort and warmth that Autumn brings to our hearts and souls.  And since it just happens to be one of my favorite seasons anyway, adding fall decorations is just a natural way to bring that joy and warmth “inside” as well.  Plus, I am loving some of the new fall decorating ideas and trends that I have incorporated this year, and hope they give you a little inspiration for your home.  Here are 6 Simples Decorating Ideas:  Fall Home Tour 2020.

Let’s get to it!

6 Simple Decorating Ideas: Fall Home Tour 2020

I know that the “less is more” decorating trend has been gaining in popularity for awhile now, and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.

And I know that we don’t have to follow all of the trends, especially when it pertains to holiday decorating.

But I will admit that this minimalist style has definitely drawn me in for fall decorating this year.

  • I don’t know if it’s because there are so many others who are struggling financially or emotionally,
  • because many of us have kiddos at home and time is precious, or
  • if it’s just because I’m choosing this as an excuse for myself (LOL).

What I do know – is that I tried to choose simple fall decorating ideas and budget-friendly projects that would be easier to replicate.

This way, there is a little something for everyone!

But I do have to admit that since I am a “more is – more” kind of decorator, this approach is still a little new to me.  And I wouldn’t change a thing!!

With that said, I hope you find some fall inspiration and some DIY decorating ideas to get your creative juices flowing!

Let’s get to the goodies!

6 Simple Decorating Ideas: Fall Home Tour 2020

#1:  Choose Words Of Gratitude

Choosing fall word signs or fall throw pillows that reflect the season of thankfulness is the easiest, yet most important part of fall decorating.

It sets the grateful spirit “mood” in your home as soon as you walk into the door.

Place wooden signs like “grateful, thankful, blessed” or “give thanks” on entry console tables or living room side tables to welcome your guests.

And don’t forget about fall “word” pillows.  Place them on entry benches, couches, chairs, or even in bookshelves.

#2:  Add Fall Flowers, Wreaths, Picks, & Arrangements

Using warmer colors like mustard yellows, spice-y oranges, and amber golds in floral arrangements and centerpieces adds instant coziness to your home.

Pop in some fall bushels to silver mercury glass vases on your living room end tables for a smaller impact, or add a group of long mustard yellow stems to large vases on the mantel for a larger impact.

And don’t forget about dried floral wreaths also – even small ones can make a statement.

If you’re looking to try something different this year, check out my new wall decor post (see below).

Learn how to frame out a small fall wreath – using wrapping paper.  It’s just a fun way to accent a smaller wreath (without breaking the bank)!

Fall picks are another easy (& cheap) way to decorate quickly.

Tuck in a couple of fall berry picks or even dried flower stems here and there – just to add a little splash of color and texture.

#3:  Add Pumpkins, Pumpkins, & More Pumpkins

I know this tip is very obvious to all of us, but it’s definitely the most fun when decorating for fall.

Use Pumpkins – basically everywhere!

Put them in bookshelves to make them pop and stand out!

Place them on top of stacked books, use them as bookends, or add 2 or 3 of them together to make a bigger statement.

And them my new pumpkin banner in the dining room.  This addition just brings in a playful and whimsical vibe, and makes me smile.

Here is another picture with fall flowers, except these are orange instead of mustard yellow (like the living room).

The orange really warms up the crisp whites against the navy blue accent wall.

#4:  Choose Fall Fabrics

Use fall colors and fall fabrics for throw blankets, accent pillows, and table runners.

Heavier fabrics like velvet and fleece are perfect choices for adding warmth to your autumn decorations.

Don’t forget to think outside of the box also.

On the pillow pictured below, I just simply added a leather trim piece for fall.  I can easily remove it when the season is over.

If you like a little more color and contrast, add one or two (orange) rust velvet pillow(s) against a white linen background.

This will punch up the drama and add a ton of depth.

If you like a more neutral or classic look, stick with more whites and cream-colored pillows.

This will put more focus and attention on your fall “decor.”

In the entry, I added the rust velvet pillow and the smoky blue blanket to the right side of the wall, and a plaid throw to the left side of the wall (see below).

You could also add a fall rug to your entry to “spice” things ups – lol!!  Wow – that was super corny!!

And here is my go-to fall blanket (inside the basket) every year, but I still love it.

It’s not fancy, but adds just the right touch to soften the hard lines of the wooden console.

#5:  Add Candles and Lights

I have to admit that there are quite a lot of candles around our house this year for fall – but most are white – yikes!!

*(Replace white candles with ivory or caramel color to soften the look).*

But I did sprinkle in a couple of orange candles because I love the “pumpkin pie/spice scent.”

Either way, the soft glow of candles and light bring in the fall magic – like nothing else can.

Here are some pictures of our dining room, daytime and then nighttime views.

The lights and candles completely transform the look of the room – right?

#6:  Repurpose Items from Past Years

Just remember that fall decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune, you just have to get creative!!

To save money and change things up, make sure to use fall decorations from past years and repurpose the items.

  • Use a hanging wall wreath from one year, as a candle ring for a dining room centerpiece the following year.
  • Change out fall table runners from your kitchen or dining room tables to console or buffet tables.
  • Move a banner draped over a dining mirror one year to your fireplace mantel the next year.

And my little iron metal pumpkin – that is so versatile for decorating.

But since this is my lazy year – he’s going “minimalist” with just the white candle.
